Cafe Village (Calverley, Leeds)

The Place

Cafe Village is not large, not central and not close to any major shops or landmarks, but by god, is it good. Situated in the village of Calverly on the outskirts of Leeds, this little shop stands out on the street with it's lovely decor and outdoor table area for the summer months (if you can remember what those feel like anyway - we sure can't). Inside, the cafe is cosy and vintage themed, with a lot of bunting and cute decorations, with just enough touch of kitsch to keep things interesting. Seating ranges from tables and chairs to armchairs to built-in padded benches, and although you can't squeeze a lot of people in here, it's a great comfy place to while away a lunch hour. Along with their lunch menu, they sell a nice selection of knick-knacks such as mugs, bunting kits, and recently, old-fashioned sweets by the quarter from the jars behind the counter. Score. Being in such a lovely little community, Cafe Village itself is very much a community place, with a really relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Staff are attentive and always up for a chat, and even when busy with a full shop of customers, always seem to be on top of things and great at getting food out in good time.

The Food

Mostly typical cafe-style fodder, the sandwiches, paninis and jacket potatoes from here are excellent, reasonably priced and filling. The special's board behind the counter changes regularly, with recent offerings of 18-hour slow roasted pulled pork changing things up in a brilliant way, and the homemade tomato and basil soup amazing at warming things up on a particularly freezing day - I'd particularly recommend this, if you get the chance. On the counter, cakes, biscuits and muffins change every few days as they're freshly baked and replaced. Over Christmas the homemade all-butter mince pies went down a treat at home, and recently I've really been enjoying the apple and oat muffins, which are super filling and soft. If you're like me, and an absolute FUSS when eating out, you'll find that staff are always happy to accommodate, either by swapping things, wrapping some bits up to take out and not others, substituting decaf, or whatever. For more indulgent trip, the cafe also sells Afternoon Tea Parties, where guests can enjoy milkshakes, sandwiches, juices, and designing their own cupcakes.

Absolutely. This cute little place is really welcoming and cosy, especially considering it's pretty far off the beaten track for most people. A great cuppa, amazing cakes and some really great food in a welcoming and friendly setting - what more could you want on a lazy Saturday, or a relaxing lunch break, really? I will continue to eat here and I think you all should too. Right now. Or, y'know, maybe just next time you're in the area.
